Incubus and Agoraphobia

from:

An incubus is usually associated with a demon that lies with a woman and gets them pregnant. The common reason is that an incubus has to do this in order to sustain himself. And the victim could at the same time provide an explanation for things that happened that are not acceptable in the society she is in.

This legend is very typical in the Middle Ages where the preoccupation with sin is very great. Women who are unmarried and gets pregnant could suffer ostracism from the society and often, as explanations are required, would accuse an incubus for lying with them. Instances such as rapes, extra marital affairs, incest and similar situations that could trigger a very strong feeling of guilt are reasons that could be cited for having an incubus getting them pregnant rather than confront the attacker. This by far is an accepted explanation as the victim could escape participation in the act. Because of the strong association of guilt with sexual behavior during the middle ages, even nocturnal orgasms and dreams leading to emissions are often referred to as having an incubus or a succubus (female version of incubus) visits during the night. The feeling of guilt suffered by the individual and the trauma experienced could cause them waking dreams and nightmares.

Whatever the reasons are, incubus and agoraphobia are associated with the terrible feeling of guilt that causes extreme anxiety. When there is the fear at confronting the subject, the victim could resort to explanations to the guilt producing behaviors that would hopefully allay the fears.

While this may be too personal for the person involved, the experience is nonetheless traumatic that would lead to worrying, that could lead to panic, which in turn could lead to agoraphobia.

When a trauma arising from a sexual act causes agoraphobia, the victim in most likelihood will never be able to normally function sexually again.

Even today, in many parts of the world, an incubus is still being held liable as the cause for women to get pregnant (when explanations are required to obscure the cause of the pregnancy).

Agoraphobia is caused by many factors. One of them is when the person is subjected to pressures and stresses that are beyond the individual’s normal ability to cope. Sexual molestation is violation of the person that could lead to very deep emotional wounds. When that happens, the person will associate the act as the cause of the panic and will from then on avoid everything that will associate the person again with the same event.

The person then will subject herself to pitiful conditions that will make her action at odds with acceptable normal functioning and interrelationships.

Then and now, the subject of violations on the person could inflict deep emotional trauma. The best recourse here is to provide understanding and to seek immediate professional help.

In the modern era, the subject of the incubi has been turned into marketing imagery, subject for books, films and music. To cite a few, Merlin of the Arthurian legend is said to be a son of an incubus. The Dark Tower by Stephen King explored the subject. The film Invisible Masters and The Entity have women being raped by unseen paranormal creatures. The same subject is also featured in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The same excuse could be held today for sexually molested individuals afraid of confronting the subject.
